Less than half an hour from Brescia, you reach Montichiari, a town of great historical, artistic and cultural importance. It was here that in 1909 the first air race in Italy was organised, while in 1921 an international Grand Prix of cars was held. Just 12 km from Desenzano del Garda, Montichiari enjoys a strategic position between the lake and the art cities of Lombardy. Built on 6 hills, Montichiari has a very important past, still preserved in the numerous remains from the Longobard era. Among the most important buildings is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built from 1729 onwards and subjected to many renovations. Inside, you can admire Girolamo di Romano's altarpiece depicting the Last Supper and Pirovano's altarpiece depicting the Ascension of the Virgin. Another important symbol of Montichiari is the Bonoris Castle, built in 1800 at the request of Count Bonoris on the site of the old municipal fortress. A faithful copy of the famous Valentino Castle in Turin, it features numerous frescoes by the painter Giuseppe Rollini. Napoleon Bonaparte's presence at Villa Monti-Prignacca in Borgosotto was also important. In Montichiari, Napoleon, in the area of the moorland to the north-west of the town, after various surveys and investigations, had an important military barracks built on 1 March 1807, covering an area of about one square kilometre, now completely destroyed.
