LUGGALA, ROUNDWOOD, COUNTY WICKLOW, IRELAND
An exquisite 18th-century house hidden inside a secluded Irish valley at the centre of an extremely picturesque and magical estate of over 5,000 acres or 2,000 hectares in size. Such an acreage being simply remarkable in an Irish context.
Gifted from Arthur Guinness to his daughter Luggala celebrates both the unique beauty of the estate and the many celebrated names that have been irresistibly drawn there and succumbed to the enchantment of Luggala throughout the families’ ownership. From writers like Brendan Behan, Robert Lowell, Seamus Heaney and Robert Graves, to actors and directors such as John Hurt, Dennis Hopper and John Boorman, and above all musicians, including The Chieftains, Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, Bono and Michael Jackson.
Luggala Lodge, an exquisite 18th-century house at the centre of the vast estate, is that special brand of eighteenth-century gothick. The house ‘boasts all the appurtenances of a grand castle’ but on a miniature scale. There are battlements and crockets as well as a variety of pointed and quatrefoil windows together with other ornamentation such as the limestone obelisks embellishing the top of the main door and corners of the central, south-facing breakfront. The principal rooms looking south across a verdant sward, often replete with grazing deer, towards a beautiful private lake (Lough Tay) complete with a white sandy beach and boathouse.
Within a modest footprint Luggala Lodge manages to contain 3 substantial reception rooms as well as a wealth of smaller rooms. Luggala Lodge itself extends to a modest 9,117 square feet or 847 square metres of accommodation with 7 bedrooms. There are a further 4 bedrooms within the guest lodge and a further 16 comprised within 7 estate lodges and cottages throughout the estate. In all the accommodation within the estate extends to some 19,099 square feet or 1,802 square metres.
The landscape at Luggala is extremely picturesque and dramatic and, understandably has been a magnet for filming. The estate has been used within the filming of various movies Sinful Davey, Zardoz, Excalibur, King Arthur, Braveheart, Animal Farm, Becoming Jane, P.S. I Love You and television series including Camelot, The Tudors and Vikings.
