The borough of Tower Hamlets is an English borough within London, Greater London, England, located in the London East, north bank of the River Thames. According to the 2011 census report, the district has a population of 256,000 and an area of 19.77 km? Education in the district is dominated by government schools, with private schools accounting for 2.4% of all schools. About 60% of the students entering primary and secondary schools are from the Bengali community. There are 16 kindergartens and nurseries, 70 primary schools, 16 secondary schools, 7 special schools, and 19 private schools in the district.
The district has 49 percent of residents aged 20-39 and 6.1 percent of residents aged 65 and over, which is lower than the rest of the country. The region's unemployment rate of 6.6% is well above the London and England averages. 29.6% of residents have a bachelor's degree or higher.
The Bailiwick is close to the City of London and is one of the commercial districts. In the 19th and mid-20th centuries, the Bailiwick was the center of London's external trade. Since the decline of the shipping industry in the 1960s, the Bailiwick has gradually been transformed into a central financial district. From the nineteenth century onwards, the population of the Bailiwick increased in line with the growth of foreign trade. By the 1940s the population was 489,956. However, after the decline of the shipping industry, the population is now about half of what it was at its peak. Points of interest are Canary Wharf and the headquarters of the London bank HSBC.
The borough is also one of London's largest ethnic minority boroughs, with a majority of Bangladeshi backgrounds. Also, the markets and shops around the road offer plenty of Bangladeshi food, wood products, and textiles for sale.
The borough is culturally rich and has a very large number of famous London attractions. These include London Bridge, Victoria Park and the Tower of London.
And, as one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the world, the borough of Tower Hamlets is home to 34.5% of its population who are Muslim and has over 40 mosques, including the most famous, the East London Mosque. Other religions include synagogues, Buddhist centers, Hindu monasteries, and Sikhism.
